Every fall in Switzerland, thousands of cows make their way down from the Alps where they have been living all summer. This decent, called Alpfahrt or Almabtreib, is celebrated in small villages across the country. The traditions of the past are alive and well in food, dress, music and customs. We spend a day in a village called Schüpfheim to watch the cows come home.
The largest bells and blooms are reserved for the cows who produced the most milk this summer, a mark of great pride for the farmers and families.
We heard yodeling from several local clubs as well as alphorn performances.
