Vienna at Christmastime, this is something I have dreamed about doing for a long time. While we were not able to travel over Christmas this year (as Parker was on-call) we were excited to head to Vienna on the 26th and still experience the city around Christmastime. Fueled by the famous Viennese coffee, cakes, pastries, goulash and more we admired the lights and decorations across the city.
Karlskirche
This beautiful baroque church was our first stop. There was a rather sketchy elevator/platform/stair situation that was plopped in the middle of the church which allows visitors to make their way to the top of the dome. I decided to brave it and I was a bit freaked out. Parker, never one to love heights, stayed planted on the ground instead. It was cool to see the frescos so close, I could nearly reach out and touch them. The trompe l’oeil was very impressive throughout the church.
Naschmarkt – We enjoy finding food markets when we travel. This one had a nice mixture of traditional foods as well as foods and ingredients from other cultures. Parker and I snacked on perogies and sipped on beer as we admired the beautiful stalls. How awesome are these big vats of sauerkraut, pickles, and pickled tomatoes?
We are never good at planning things out before our trips… so we usually end up figuring it out as we go.
Schmetterlinghaus (Butterfly House) A lovely Art Nouveau greenhouse. We didn’t see many butterflies (not quite the season…?), but it was still really beautiful!
Österreichische Nationalbibliothek (Austrian National Library)
A slice of the famous Viennese Sachertorte (a special chocolate cake), apfelstreusel (apple strudel), and Wiener Melange (a Viennese coffee drink).
